How do I know if a variable is dependent or independent?

Independent Variable: The thing you change in an experiment

Dependent Variable: The thing that changes because you changed the independent variable (The thing that is measured and tested)

Ex:

You want to know how much water is best to give your plant so that it grows tall and healthy

Independent Variable: The amount of water you give to each plant (It varies)

Dependent Variable: The height of each plant (Changes because you change the independent variable)
