Newton's first law states that if an object is in motion, then t will continue the motion in the same speed and direction unless any external force is applied on it. This property is also termed as inertia in physics.

Inertia will be present in both a moving car and the passengers sitting in a car. Wearing a seat belt will provide the external force that would stop the passenger from crashing forward at the time of an accident.
