Two joggers run 8 miles north and then 5 miles west. What is the shortest

distance, to the nearest tenth of a mile, they must travel to return to their
starting point?

Basically, you need to use Pythagoras Theorem to work it out. So 8 miles up and 5 miles left would make the two sides, so you need to use the formula c =
√(a^2 + b^2). C is always the diagonal, which is what we need to find, to get the quickest way back.

So, using the online pythagoras calculator and the previous formula, you can work out that it is 9.43 miles
