Zora Neal Hurston uses bags as a metaphor to represent humans. She sees herself as a brown bag which is among other different colored bags. She tries to say that what differentiates herself from the other is her skin color and she is like the other human when it comes to character.

Just like the different colored bags are made up of same components and parts when it comes to interior design and development. She wants to tell that like every other human being her feelings, wants, desires, ambitions and emotions are all the same as others despite her skin color.
