The correct answer to this open question is the following.
I remember an advertising campaign of Pepsi, where they hired former San Francisco 49ers QB and Hall of Fame member, Joe Montana. Montana endorsed the soft drink meanwhile images of the Super Bowl were on the screen. They tried to connect the idea of drinking Pepsi and being a champion.
This advertisement tried to appeal to the emotions of consumers in two basic ways. Using Ethos and using Pathos. Ethos, because they appealed to the personality and credibility of a true winner such as Joe Montana. And Pathos because they appealed to the emotion of winning and be a champion.

Answer:

Many commercials revolving around the adoption of dogs use sad, depressed looking dogs. This is to make you feel sad for them and buy one of their dogs.
