Under the Treaty of Paris, Great Britain was forced to give up significant territory in North America, namely its 13 colonies. Newly-won U.S. territory stretched westward to the Mississippi River. West of the Mississippi River was controlled by Spain. Britain was allowed to retain control over what is now Canada.
