Alcohol directly affects neurotransmitters which are the chemical messengers helps in transmitting the signals in the whole body and controls thought processes, emotion, and behavior.

Alcohol affects both neurotransmitters named excitatory neurotransmitters and inhibitory neurotransmitters.

Excitatory neurotransmitter involves level of glutamate. During alcohol consumption the release of glutamate decreases, resulting in a slow processing of brain. An inhibitory neurotransmitter involves GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid), and alcohol allows increase in GABA production in the brain, that results in sedation.

Alcohol consumption also increases the release of dopamine that affects feelings of that person and makes him feel great.
