Cortés met two people, a Friar who spoke Spanish and Mayan and a woman who spoke Mayan and Nahuatl. Nahuatl is the language of the Aztecs. By translating from Spanish to Mayan to Nahuatl and back again, they could communicate with the Aztecs.
