I consider songs to be a form of poetry. Songs may be a form of poetry depending on what type it is. Songs sometimes allow people to express themselves in a way that poetry does as well. Songs can rhyme like poetry and songs can give someone an emotional connection to the artist or poet like with poetry. The difference is that poems are for understanding mostly and songs are for you to feel.
