Why did many reformers want to improve education in the United States in the early 1800’s

In the early 1800’s free public education was relatively common in the northern region, but in the south most students were tutored or educated at home. Horace Mann led the educational reform movement calling for local taxes to be used to build “common schools” to ensure free equal education for all social classes and religions of Caucasian children.
