Huayna Capac was the eleventh Inca (king) of the Incan Empire, from 1493 until 1527, and the sixth in the Hanan Cusco dynasty. He succeeded Tupac Yupanqui. He was the father of Ninan Cuyochi, Huascar, Atahualpa, Tupac Huallpa, Manco Inca Yupanqui and Pawllu Inca.

Huayna Capac extended the Incan Empire considerably south, to the present day Chile and Argentina. For many years, he and his armies fought to connect to the kingdom lands lying north of his kingdom, from what is now Ecuador (and a small area of Colombia) to the far north of Chinchaysuyo province. The capital of the empire lay far to the south in Cusco, and Huayna Capac hoped to build a strong fort in the north of the city of Quito.
