Sun light combined with water and CO2 is used by plants (algae and some bacteria) in photosynthesis for the production of sugars (carbohydrates). During this reaction, which occurs in chloroplasts, CO2 is reduced (gain electrons), the water is oxidized (loses electrons) and oxygen (O2) is produced. That O2 is then used in cellular respiration. Cellular respiration uses glucose and O2 to produce energy in the form of ATP and it occurs in mitochondria. CO2 and H2O are formed.
