Artists moved to Paris to participate in what some historians and literary critics have termed "The Lost Generation." One of the primary inspirations for this work was World War I. Writers such as Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway, T.S. Eliot, Aldous Huxley, F. Scott Fitgerald, Isidora Duncan and J.R.R. Tolkien. Many of these writers emphasized dark themes in their writings and commented on the naked abuse of power. They were also critical of the capitalist system.
