In the first chapters of "The Prince", Machiavelli describes the different types of principalities. Chapter 5, is dedicated to informing how to rule principalities or cities which were governed under their own laws before they were annexed. Machiavelli states that a Prince should be careful when governing these type of territories and describes how people react when joining rebelions.
