Why is cos(180°) negative?

please help me explain in words:)

Cos 0 and cos 180 are both = 1 and -1, respectively. The cosine of an angle is the ratio of the two sides of a triangle “adjacent/hypotenuse”. Whether the angle is 0 or 180, the adjacent side and the hypotenuse coincide and so both are of the same length so the ratio of adjacent to hypotenuse will be 1.0.
