The Socratic method, also known as maieutics, method of elenchus, elenctic method, or Socratic debate, is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions.

Named after the Classical Greek philosopher Socrates, the Socratic method, (known as well as the method of elenchus, elenctic method, or Socratic debate) is a cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, in which it is aimed critical thinking by asking and answering questions.

As a method of teaching, it consists in a dialectical method in which it is held a discourse between two or more people who hold different points of view about a subject but it is intended to establish the truth through reasoned arguments.

In such discussion the defense of one point of view is questioned, that is to say, that one participant may lead another to contradict themselves in some way, thus weakening the defender's point.
