Before running for president in 1932, Rooselvelt had been governor of the state of New York (C). In 1922, Roosevelt help Democrat Alfred Smith's campaign for the governorship of New York. In 1928, Roosevelt was popular in the state so Smith asked him to run for being governor in New York hoping that his candidacy would uphold Democratic support in the state. Roosevelt won New York's gubernatorial election by one-half of a percentage point.
