In 1796, anti-Federalists gathered around Jefferson. Members of Jefferson's group called themselves Democratic-Republicans. Northern businessmen, bankers, and merchants supported the Federalists. The two political parties are:

- Democratic Party: Also considered as the Liberty Party, although the term liberal has a different connotation in The United States closer to progress.

- Republican Party: Is a political party of the United States, next to the democratic Party is a Political are the only two parties that have wielded power in that country since the mid-nineteenth century. This party is commonly associated with conservatism.
