social structure: king, higher clergy, nobles, lesser nobles-knights-lower clergy, and the serfs-peasants. During the Renaissance the demands of society shifted and became based on money instead of allegiances. The church had a difficult time adjusting to this new way of thinking

Answer:

Essentially, before the Renaissance, the power and the wealth of Europe lied in the hands and the clergy and therefore the Church. The Renaissance also came up with a humanism and secular movement, where the focus shifted from the heavens and religion to actual humans. Artists such as Michelango painted portraits that would emphasis the greatness of man. With the emphasis being less on the church, the church lost power. The Renaissance would also come with the Enlightenment where Clergy and the church would lose their power and the focus on life and status moved away from the Church.
