The Exodusters was the name given to the African American settlers who moved from the southern states that bordered the Lousiana River into the state of Kansas. The mass migration to Kansas occurred in the year 1879 after the Civil War.
Kansas proved to be an ideal location for African American migrants, as it was a free state and it offered numerous opportunities for this community to develop. Numerous African Americans left the southern states due to the oppression from groups such as the "White League".
