Mary Antin was born in Polotsk, Russia, in 1881. When her father´s business collapsed due to illness, he immigrated to America. Mary (then Maryashe), her mother and the rest of the family was left behind until the father saved enough to send for them. Mary tells all this in her famous autobiography "The Promised Land".
