The first thing the nurse should do if the patient is injured by lightening is to check his breathing and circulation.

Cardiopulmonary arrest is the most common cause of death from lightening, so, the breathing and the cardiac status need to be assessed immediately to determine if CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is necessary.
