Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec Empire, which has was founded in 1325 in an island in Lake Texocco, in the Valley of Mexico. It was conquered by the Spanish, under the leadership of Hernan Cortes in 1521.
Tenochtitlan was one of the most powerful cities and the capital of an empire that dominated vast lands in Northern and Central America. It was built with the tributes paid by the civilizations that were under the dominance of the Aztecs. Trade activities also contributed as an important source of wealth for this city. Its society had a very detailed organization, with very well defined roles and structures. Its great size and the iconic location in the lake made it an amazing place at first sight.
