A French fleet conducted operations in America in 1778-79, but the support that made the difference came in 1780, when French Gen. Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau arrived in Rhode Island with more than 5,000 French soldiers. Though he spoke no English, Rochambeau hit it off with Washington.
