Greece is bordered by the Aegean, Mediterranean, Ionian, and Crete Seas. These seas greatly influenced the growth and development of Ancient Greece. Mountains, seas, and other natural landforms created barriers around many city-states creating a strong need for fishing and commerce and influencing Greek settlement. The seas surrounding Greece allowed for travel and trade with foreign nations helping to build a domineering naval power.
