x=4

The only way you can go about doing this is by finding the factors of 36 (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36) and then seeing which pair make sense.

In this case, 9 and 4.

So, plug in the numbers so it makes sense.

(5+4)4=36

5+4=9
9*4=36

Answer:

x=4 x=-9

Explanation:

(5+x)x=36

Distribute the x

5x+x^2 =36

Subtract 36 from each side

x^2 +5x -36 = 36-36

x^2 +5x -36 = 0

Factor

What numbers multiply together to give you -36 and add together to give you 5

-4*9 = 36

-4+9 = 5

(x-4) (x+9) =0

Using the zero product property

x-4 = 0 x+9 =0

x=4 x=-9
