Explanation:

If you add something you take the first number and add it to the second one. If it is multiplication, you take the first number, and multiply by itself, so it would be 1 times itself (1) and it is kind of like 1+0 which equals 1. It doesn't sound like a lot, but when you get into Algebra and Pre-Algebra, etc. it does come along easier.
