Answer:

It makes it more interesting/scarier because it's told from only one point of view. What does the narrator repeatedly claim about himself? He repeatedly says that he is sane. He claims he is not a madman, which is not true.

The narrators takes such lengths so the readers have a better understand of the plot and what the narrator is trying to imply.
