The British had a strong relationship with many of the Native American tribes of the west. Limiting the west expansion would let the Natives stay on their land and not have to pushed off. This would keep Peace with the natives and have them on their side. This was an action that was promised due to a quasi-peace proclamation made with the Native Americans.
