There are three basic rules of addition.

Positive + Positive = Positive Ex: 1+1=2

Negative + Negative = Negative Ex: -2+-2=-4

Negative + Positive = Positive or Negative depending on the value.

Ex= 1+(-2)=(-1)

Ex=2+(-1)=1

So subtraction problems can be turned into addition problems.

For example:

4-2 is the same as 4+(-2).

Or -5-7 is the same as -5+(-7).
