5 8 of a rectangle is coloured red. Damien cuts this red part into a number of pieces so that each piece is 1 16 of the whole rectangle. If the area of the rectangle is 48 square centimetres, what is the area of each piece?

Given that:

Let area of rectangle = x

Each piece = 1/16 of whole rectangle

Area of whole rectangle = 48 cm²

Area of each piece = 1/16 of 48

1/16 * 48cm²

Hence area of each piece = 3cm²
