Answer: The colonization produced political, religious and cultural differences between the north and the south. In the south it is predominantly Catholic and the north is Protestant. Catholics believe that union with the Republic of Ireland would protect them from discrimination in employment, housing, and government. Protestants want to stay a part of the mostly Protestant United Kingdom.
