The theme of “Caged Bird” is freedom. Closely related to this theme are imprisonment and confinement—in other words, a lack of freedom. Angelou establishes freedom as the primary theme by using the word multiple times as she describes both the birds, alternating stanzas to contrast the “free bird” with the “caged” bird.
