Adding number of boys(4 boys) and girls(5 girls) together will give the total number of pupils IN ALL therefore : 4+5=9
There are 9 pupils in all

So: Fraction of BOYS=
Num of BOYS/Total Num of pupils=
4/9. —— is the answer to (a)

AND

Fraction of GIRLS=
Num of GIRLS/Total Num of pupils=
5/9 ——is the answer to (b)
