There are a lot of reasons, More territory, More People, More money, resources, manpower pools, maybe so they can gain control of more people to tax. Gain access to a certain region like a body of water for sea trade. Things like colonialism were motivated by the promise of gold, glory, and the ability to spread god (for the europeans). And it increased the slave and labor pool.
