Answer

it was when lords held lands from royalty in exchange for military service like knights, while the peasants (or serfs) were asked to live on their lord's land in exchange they gave him homage, labor, and a share of the produce, notionally in exchange for protection.

Answer:

The feudal society was one organized for war; a central reason for its coming into being was the need for kings and great lords to call forth armies of mounted warriors. This is implicit in the fact that the entire fief-system was based on multiples of knights' fees.
