The northern states voted for lincoln. lincoln always had leaned towards "every man should be free", or at least no slaves. the northern states, who had agreed with him, gave him his vote. that is why, when the states were split up into two segments, the north was "free" and the south was "slave". this really changed us today because once the north won the civil war, slaves were free. if the south had won, things would really be different.
