Why did states want the power to appoint their own representatives?

Depends on the time period but I hope in general terms it still helps, states right have been a huge thing in the U.S since the monarchial neglect started. Representatives are elected to advocate for things that matter to the state as a whole and give the populace a voice, so having them be accepted by a community and have them actually know what issues matter to the populace is vital.
