First, they piled up plants from the water. Then they anchored these rafts between trunks of willow trees. Finally, they heaped the lake's fertile mud on piles to create plots for farming. The Aztec grew many crops, such as maize, beans, squash, avocados, tomatoes, peppers, and flowers. They also raised turkeys, ducks, geese, and dogs for food.
