Which is less: (-20)+10 or 20+(-35)? Explain your answer.

Answer: 20+(-35)

Explanation:

a.) -20+10

You owe me 20 dollars and you gave me 10 dollars already so how much more do you owe me? If you got you owe me 10 dollars, then you are correct. So the answer is -10 because the amount you owe is what still needs to be given so it is negative. (-10)

b.) 20+(-35) or 20-35

This problem would be you gave me 20 dollars but then took 35 dollars from me so how much do you owe you. You owe me 15 dollars since you gave me $20 a while ago and took from me. This would be a negative 15 since you owe it to me. (-15)

-15 is less that -10 since you would owe me more if you owed me 15 dollars. Also, -10 is closer to 0 than -15.
