The siege of Petersburg was important as abolitionists invaded Petersburg and raided the town, led by General Grant to defeat the confederates in Petersburg and take it over. It was an important battle as Petersburg was an important transportation spot for the Confederacy and if they lost it the Union would have a large advantage.
