Answer: Before the advent of agriculture, hunting, gathering, and fishing were the most common means of subsistence throughout the world. The oak forest of parts of North America provided an abundant harvest of nuts. Americans Indian communities living in and around these forests therefore collected and stored this food. Other Native Americans Indians living near the Pacific Ocean became adept at salmon fishing. The bison herds if the Great Plains provided sustenance, and so bison serve as a focal point for many plains culture.
