Found this off of google, "The purpose was to change the general way of thinking, support religious toleration. The encyclopedia became a major weapon in the philosophers' crusade against the old French society. ... The encyclopedia was sold to doctors, clergymen, teachers, and lawyers, thus spreading ideas of enlightenment."
