1. What caused sectional tensions between the North and South before the Civil War?

Racism and slavery. This was a common problem between north and south that caused the Civil war. But before the civil war they were problems then too, everyone in the south was angry that the north was providing shelter and safety for slaves in free states and so this sparked the Civil War.
