The FLUTE and PICCOLO are the highest pitched instruments of the woodwind family. The flute's smaller relative, the piccolo, has a range one octave higher than the flute. The flute and piccolo are held sideways. The player produces a tone by blowing air across a small opening near the top of the instrument.
