Adipocytes are cells composed of adipose tissue and are specialized to store energy in the form of fat. In cell lines, it has been shown that adipogenesis can be inhibited through the use of inhibitory proteins, which function to arrest preadipocytes in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. These proteins are transcription factors that control cell-cycle progression by increasing gene expression of cell cycle inhibitors such as, for example, p21 protein. In the case of p21, this protein is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor that binds and thus inhibits Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), thereby controlling the progression of the cell cycle at the G1 and S phases.
