preoperative- things that nurses and doctors do to prepare the patient for surgery. ex. talk through the procedure, insert iv, sterilize patient, have patient change into the proper surgery attire, ect.

operative- the actual performance of the surgery.

postoperative- patient is out of surgery and woken up. iv taken out, monitors come off, and usually can get up and moving within a short amount of time.
