This is not really a random sample. The athletes are heavily biased toward loving sports. Likely they'll pick their favorite sport to be the one they are currently playing.
Example: if basketball players are asked their favorite sport, they likely might pick basketball.
A much better approach is to randomly select names from a hat, use computer software, or a random number table. This will produce a more random sample to help better represent the population.
