Why is mushroom called a saprophytic fungus?

Mushrooms are the advanced members of a fungi group belonging to the class Basidiomycetes. They grow on dead and decaying matters like dung, and old rotten logs which are rich in organic matter. Therefore, they are saprophytic fungi.
