Find the equation of a line perpendicular to -3x + y=-5 that contains the point (1,4). Write the equation in slope.

y = -1/3x + 13/3

Explanation:

-3x + y=-5

y = 3x -5

Slope of perpendicular line is the opposite inverse so 3 becomes -1/3.

y-intercept going through point (1, 4):

y = mx + b

4 = -1/3(1) + b

4 = -1/3 + b

b = 13/3

Perpendicular equation of a line:

y = mx + b

y = -1/3x + 13/3
